Italy is one of my favorite countries in the world, so this list was an interesting one to put together!
Reddit travelers agree on which Italian destinations to avoid—and their reasons are consistent.
Overwhelming crowds, aggressive tourist traps, and a loss of authentic character top the list of regrets.
Italian Places Not Worth Revisiting According to Reddit Travelers
Every traveler’s experience is unique, but when hundreds of people share similar sentiments about certain destinations, patterns emerge.
These destinations aren’t necessarily “bad” places—many offer valuable one-time experiences—but Redditors consistently mention them as places they wouldn’t return to.
1. The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is plastered all over Instagram, but according to many Reddit travelers, the reality doesn’t match the filtered photos.
Towns like Positano and Amalfi are heavily overcrowded and incredibly expensive, and the logistics of simply getting around can be genuinely stressful.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “It is beautiful but there are so many better places to visit in Italy that are way more authentic feeling and provide better experiences.”
- “It’s basically become a social media set now, quick in-and-out for pictures and videos. Fast food tourism.”
- “We just did Positano yesterday and it was extremely overrated. Gorgeous views but overpriced souvenirs/shops, not easily walkable, and people are packed on the streets like sardines.”
Worth Seeing Once:
- The iconic cliffside views of Positano—they really are gorgeous
- A scenic drive (or better yet, scooter ride) along the famous coastal road (in the quieter seasons)
- The historic cathedral in Amalfi town
A Better Alternative
Consider regions like Puglia or Calabria for stunning coastal scenery without the extreme prices and crowds.
Or do what we did—visit in September or base yourself in Sorrento!
2. Venice
Perhaps the most divisive city in Italy, Venice frequently gets described as feeling like “Disneyland” during peak cruise ship hours.
While its canal-based beauty is undeniable, many travelers say the crowds, smells, and prices left them with no desire to return.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “If you go to the popular spots early in the morning or late at night, it’s magical. The rest of the time, you’re shoulder to shoulder with cruise ship people.”
- “After spending 5 days in Venice I see no need to go back. It’s an incredibly beautiful, unique, architecturally artistic city, and I’m glad I saw it. But it’s also incredibly annoying to get around, the food is not as good as other parts of Italy, and it’s a little too fake touristy for me.”
- “We’ve been there in the summer. It was incredibly crowded, hot as hell, and the canals were stinking. It might be super nice in off-season, but I’ll never know.”
Worth Seeing Once:
- The spectacular St. Mark’s Square and Basilica
- A gondola ride through the historic canals
- The colorful nearby islands of Murano and Burano
A Better Alternative
Stay overnight on the island itself (like we did!) to experience Venice before and after the day-trippers, visit in the off-season, or try the quieter canal-side charm of Trieste in Italy’s north.
3. Milan
Milan, Italy’s fashion and business capital, frequently tops lists of disappointing Italian cities.
Travelers feel it lacks the “ancient” Italian charm of Rome or Florence, and the area around the Duomo is notorious for aggressive street vendors and scammers.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “Milan was fairly underwhelming. I wouldn’t rush back other than as a gateway to the lakes.”
- “In Milan now and 100% agree. Large, dirty, crowded. You can see the duomo and last supper in one day. Go to lake como.”
- “Worth a day to see the Duomo and the Last Supper, but that’s about it. Scammers at the Galleria were the worst we encountered in Italy (as far as aggression).”
Worth Seeing Once:
- The spectacular Gothic Duomo di Milano and its rooftop views
- Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” at Santa Maria delle Grazie
- The canal-side Navigli district for aperitivo away from the tourist center
A Better Alternative
Use Milan as your gateway to Lake Como, or if you’re staying, explore the Navigli and Ticinese neighborhoods for local markets and authentic food.
4. Florence
This one might hurt for art lovers, but Florence appears surprisingly often in “never again” discussions.
Visitors frequently mention museum fatigue, congested streets, and a center that feels increasingly gentrified and commercialized for tourists.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “Florence was definitely my ‘I’m never coming back here’ city. Overrun with tourist traps. The art was lovely, but the city was just ok. I got tired of feeling squeezed for cash everywhere I went.”
- “The Ponte Vecchio has to be the most utterly and completely overrated tourist trap in Europe. It’s filled with about 50 yards of gold vendor kiosks and then… you’re across it.”
- “Went in the off season and even then, the crowds were so intense I had to leave. I did see a lot of the things that Florence is famous for and then hightailed it to Lucca.”
Worth Seeing Once:
- Michelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell’Accademia
- The magnificent Duomo and Brunelleschi’s dome
- The Uffizi Gallery, home to the world’s greatest Renaissance art collection
A Better Alternative
See the highlights on a day trip (one day was enough for us!), then base yourself in the beautiful nearby Tuscan towns of Siena or Lucca.
5. Pisa
Pisa draws millions of visitors for one famous photo—and according to Reddit travelers, that’s about all it offers.
Beyond the iconic Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli, many find the city little more than a stopover packed with souvenir stalls.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “Pisa. The tower/baptistery is cool but that’s about it. The rest of the city is a tourist trap.”
- “Pisa is truly awful. Lived there for a while. The Tower is actually quite impressive but there is no reason to spend more than 45 minutes in this city.”
- “Manage the expectation for Pisa. We talked to a few Italians that said Pisa is literally a 10 min stop, take pictures and leave unless you’re trying to go up the tower or go into the cathedral.”
Better Alternative
Stop in Pisa for a quick photo on your way through Tuscany (if you really want to check the box), but plan to stay in charming, highly-rated Lucca just 30 minutes away.
6. Rome
The Eternal City makes the list not because its ancient sites disappoint—they don’t—but because many travelers find everything around them exhausting.
Crowds, scams, aggressive panhandlers, and famously unreliable public transport leave many visitors feeling the city is one giant hustle.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “Rome was horrible. It felt absolutely soulless. Everything felt created for tourists.”
- “On our visit in December I didn’t get within 20 yards of the Trevi fountain. Too crowded.”
- “As a young architect I loved the major sites and could spend hours roaming from antiquity to antiquity. But everything else about the city is a hustle. There is no joy sitting in the overrun piazzas, dodging mopeds, or zigzagging to avoid aggressive panhandlers.”
Worth Seeing Once:
- The Colosseum and Roman Forum—2,000 years of history in one walk
- Vatican City with St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel
- The charming Trastevere neighborhood, which even Rome’s critics tend to enjoy
A Better Alternative
Give Rome 2-3 focused days, book major sights for early morning slots, and base yourself in Trastevere.
Or explore Italy’s more relaxed cities like Lucca, Turin and Alba, which one Redditor credits with restoring their love of Italy.
7. Naples
Naples, while authentic and historically significant, is one of the most consistently mentioned cities in “never again” threads.
The chaotic atmosphere, ever-present trash, and safety concerns overshadow the city’s rich cultural heritage for many visitors—and I have to admit, this was our experience too.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “It’s very loud, intense and busy. It was a very interesting city to visit once, but I’m not coming back.”
- “Naples is notorious for filth, crime, and rip offs, and has been for decades.”
- “It smelled, there was graffiti and rubbish everywhere, and it was impossible to cross the road with ease. You just had to walk confidently and expect traffic to not hit you.”
A Better Alternative
Base yourself in Sorrento instead and visit Pompeii and Vesuvius on day trips—you get all the region’s highlights without the chaos.
8. Cinque Terre
The five colorful villages of Cinque Terre have become victims of their own Instagram fame.
These tiny fishing towns simply weren’t built for mass tourism, and travelers report packed streets, tourist-trap restaurants, and tiny villages you can see in an hour or two.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “Stayed in Riomaggiore for 4 nights and was over it by day 2. The 5 towns are all super small and not prepared for mass tourism. All the (very limited) restaurants are tourist traps with mediocre food and high prices.”
- “It is beautiful, but has been ruined by tourism. Calamari in a cone, French fries, the worst pizza I’ve ever had—it felt like Italian Disneyland. I enjoyed the hiking, sea views & focaccia, but that was it.”
A Better Alternative
Visit as a day trip rather than staying overnight (a few hours in Riomaggiore was genuinely enough for us).
Another alternative is to head to the quieter fishing towns of the nearby Italian Riviera like Portovenere or Camogli.
9. Palermo, Sicily
Palermo seduces visitors with magnificent architecture and legendary street food—but many travelers leave disappointed.
The city’s neglected beauty, ever-present trash, and safety concerns leave a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “We stayed 3 nights and it was 2 nights too long. The architecture is amazingly beautiful but sad at the same time because nobody takes care of it. Everything is dirty. You literally kick trash as you walk. I’ve never seen so much garbage on the ground before.”
- “We had some great food in Palermo but otherwise it was a wasted time. Dirty, smelly streets full of trash and dog poo. We didn’t feel safe at all and avoided going out after sunset.”
A Better Alternative
Head to Sicily’s east coast instead—beautiful Taormina offers coastal glamour, while charming Ortigia (Syracuse) delivers baroque beauty with far cleaner streets.
10. Catania, Sicily
Sicily’s second city sits in the shadow of Mount Etna, but for many travelers, the dramatic setting can’t make up for the state of the city itself.
Reddit users are notably blunt about this one.
Why travelers don’t want to return:
- “Ugly and dirty.”
- “A massive waste of beautiful potential, spoilt by rubbish just left in the street.”
A Better Alternative
Use Catania’s airport as your entry point, but stay in Taormina or Syracuse for a far more enjoyable Sicilian east coast experience.
A Quick Note
A quick note: these are NOT my personal opinions. They’re gathered from popular opinions on Reddit from travelers I don’t know.
And honestly, I disagree with quite a few of them!
We absolutely LOVED the Amalfi Coast (we visited in September), loved Venice (again September, and we stayed on the island to enjoy before and after the rush), and loved Cinque Terre (again in September).
On the flip side, we didn’t enjoy Naples, found Pisa okay but a bit uneventful, and one day in Florence was enough for us.
Which brings me to my biggest tip: you can often completely change your experience of these places by visiting in the shoulder or off-season, or by spending the right amount of time there.
Sometimes a day trip is what ruins a destination and staying longer would transform it—and sometimes it’s the exact opposite!
So take this list as a guide to manage your expectations, not a reason to cross these places off your list entirely.

Remember—every one of these places is on someone else’s “favorite destinations” list!
As I said at the start, timing and expectations are everything.
Visit in the shoulder season, stay overnight where the day-trippers don’t, and you might just fall in love with a destination that Reddit told you to skip.
